NOTE: For the purpose of this tracking discussion we shall be using STRONG SRT DECODERS. .............................................. STEP1: Start by connecting your decoder to your television set. This is quite simple just follow your decoder's user manual. However if you run into any difficulty,then drop a comment below stating the problem encountered and i will guide you through. .............................................. STEP2: Haven done step1,position your television set in such a way that you can see the screen clearly while standing outside beside your satellite dish. However if the distance is too large,simply move your television and decoder sets outside close to your dish and set them up there. Now connect them to power supply using an extension cable and power them ON. Also verify that your decoder is displaying well on your television set. .............................................. STEP3: Now press "menu" on your decoder remote to display the menu screen,then select "installation",............. Now select "dish setting" to setup your dish with your decoder............. First select from "satellite" the satellite position you wish to track e.g intelsat10/20 ku 68.5'E.......... Secondly, make sure "LNB power" is set to ON........... Next select your "LNB type" and "LNB freq"(just check the printed sticker on your LNB for these details).............. But i recommend you set "LNB type" to single and leave "LNB freq" at the default value usually 5.150.............. Next, make sure the "22KHz" is set to OFF..................... Now If you used multiple LNBs for your satellite dish, then definitely ,you must have used a diseqc switch(diseqc switch is connector device used to link two or more LNBs together,it has two or more ports labelled LNB1,LNB2,LNB3........where you connect your LNBs and a single port labelled RECEIVER/DECODER from where you connect your LNBs to your decoder set)......... Now select the ports which you used to connect your ku-band and c-band LNBs accordingly and Save your "dish setting". .............................................. STEP4: select "manual scan",................... Now select "satellite" to choose the satellite position that you configured in "dish setting",...................... Next select "frequency" to choose the channel frequency,............ however if not on the list select 'ADD TP' by pressing the green button on your remote to input the channel parameters manually... OR you can simply edit the existing values of frequency and symbol rate by highlighting the desired values you wish to edit,pressing a numerical key(0 to 9) when highlighted and selecting edit...................... NOTE: To enable you hit the highest level of signal for all the channels on any satellite position,it is important to first track the first frequency on the list of frequencies on that satellite position as their channels often carry the highest level of signal......................................................................................... Next set the polarisation V/H or R/L,................... Now set "search type" as desired: select FREE to scan for all free tv and radio channels......,OR select TV to scan for only paid and free tv channels,..... OR select ALL to scan for all tv and radio channels both free and paid.......... Next set "Network search" to ON/OFF as desired(when set to ON,it searches for latest transpoders and add them automatically to your decoder) .............................................. STEP5: Now go to your dish and make it lie vertically at 12 o'clock while facing East or west or north or south depending on where the satellite position you wish to track is located......................... For example: for satellite positions located in the east such as intelsat 10/20 ku 68.5'E, align your dish vertically at 12 o'clock while facing East................................. Now haven done that, find the point of azimuth for that satellite position you configured in "dish setting" by "gradually" moving your dish from side to side(from left to right and vice versa) and while doing this,focus your eyes onto your tv screen and keep monitoring the red signal level on your tv..................... You will get to a point where the red signal level will rise very sharply(NOTE: you will definitely discover that point by the time you have rotated your dish maybe twice or more through 360 degree)............................. Now when you hit that point,tighten the nut and bolt that controls the dish azimuth........Now that is the point of azimuth for that satellite position.... ...................................................NOTE: MANY SATELLITE POSITIONS SHARE A COMMON POINT OF AZIMUTH,THIS MEANS THAT ONCE YOU HAVE GOTTEN THE POINT OF AZIMUTH FOR ANY SATELLITE POSITION,THEN YOU CAN EASILY TRACK OTHER SATELLITE POSITIONS BY SIMPLY ELEVATING OR DEPRESSING YOUR SATELLITE DISH. ............................................................STEP6: Haven found the azimuth, you now need to find the elevation. (NOTE: in this case,you don't need to find the depression since the dish by lying vertically at 12 o'clock is already at its highest depression level)..................... Now with your eyes still focused onto the signal level on your tv screen,gradually, start raising your dish up and a point will come when the red signal level will start rising into green signal level......... find the point where you will get the highest green signal level...... Now when you hit that point,tighten the nut and bolt that controls the dish elevation........Now that is the point of elevation for that satellite position.... .............................................. STEP7: Haven gotten the highest level of green signal for that satellite position,press "ok" on your remote to scan and behold you will be greeted with all the collections of both free and paid tv and radio channels on that particular frequency. .............................................. Once you have focused your satellite dish at any satellite position,then you can simply use Auto scan to get all the channels on that satellite position................... Just select "AUTO SCAN" , now select the satellite positions you configured in the "dish setting",............. Now set "search type" and "Network search" as desired.............. After setting your choice, press "ok" on your remote to scan and behold you will be greeted with all the collections of both free and paid tv and radio channels on that satellite position. ....................................................................................It may also interest you to know that you can watch collection of channels on more than one satellite position at the same time by simply employing multiple LNBs and satellite dishes or by simply motorising your dish.............. HOW TO ASSEMBLE AND TRACK SATELLITE DISHES PART2

Now haven focused your dish at the satellite you wish to track, there are certain parameters that you will need to enable you scan the channels you actually want to receive on that satellite position.. Now, these Channel parameter you need for tunning your desired channels takes the form of the syntax below; channel parameter syntax: frequency, polarisation, symbol rate, FEC For example: BBC World: 12285 V 27500 3/4......, Where "BBC World" is the name of the channel, "12285" is the frequency, "V" is the polarisation, "27500" is the symbol rate(SR) and "3/4" is the forward error correction(FEC).............................................................. In my previous posts, we have talked about the frequency of transmission..... Now lets explain the rest of the parameters stated in the syntax.................... Polarisation: A transmission from a satellite can have one of four polarisations, that are dictated by the antenna(dish) used on the satellite. You must have a matching antenna(dish) to recieve them. The four polarisations are in two catagories: >>Linear polarisation: where the launcher feeds a single dipole at a time in the waveguide that can be either Horizontal (H) or Veritcal(V). Ku band transponders(Frequencier) usually (but not always) use linear polarisation, hence you will find most Ku LNBFs are linear. >>Circular polarisation: where the signal is fed to two H&V(horizontal and vertical) dipoles simulatiously in the waveguide.....Depending on the phase relationship of the feed to the two launcher dipoles determines if the polarisation is lefthand(L) or righthand(R). Typically C band transmissions use circular polarisation, when you buy a C band LNBf it will almost certainly be circular polarised. As far as your STB(decoder) is concerned it selects H&V and L&R polarisation by the same method (ie changing the DC feed voltage to the LNB), The type of polarisation is dictated by the LNBF itself. At Ku band there are advantages to using Linear polarisation,and at C band Linear polarisation tends to be distorted (rotated) as it comes through the atmosphere, hence circular is used as it is not affected in the same manner. In the US the two large DTH pay TV operators (DirectTVandEchostar) both use circular polarisation in Ku band rather than linear, thus,the Skew (polarisation alignement) need not be adjusted, therefore one less thing for home installers to worry about. .............................................. symbol rate parameter: Effectively, this is a measure of how 'fast' data or signal is sent from the satellite to your Decoder and its measured in megabaud,so you may call it the baud rate of satellite transmission................... Forward error correction(FEC): It corrects any kind of error in the satellite signals before its transmitted hence the name "forward error correction". .............................................. Now lets talk about how you can track your satellite dishes ..............................................NOTE: You need to know the tunning parameters of the channels that you wish to receive and the satellite position on which they are located. Again note that every satellite position has what is called a "FOOTPRINT" wow what the heck is this again!!! Well relax, footprint is simply the range of areas that the signal beams of any satellite position covers. This means that you can only receive the channels on a particular satellite position if the footprint extends or covers up to your location..... Now you may probably be wondering how you can know if the footprint of a particular satellite covers your area.... How do i get these informations and the channel parameters?,well don't worry its quite simple..... Just go to the following websites to acquire all the informations you need regarding any satellite position and channel: .............................................. http://www.lyngsat.com Lyngsat is very popular and highly reputable,they are 99.5% accurate and i always use it,thus i recommend it..... However you may also use; .............................................. http://www.kingofsat.net http://www.flysat.com .............................................. Now if you know the name of the channel you want,go to search engines like http://google.com and type in the channel name lyngsat or kingofsat or flysat for example: "BBC ONE lyngsat" or "BBC ONE flysat" or "BBC ONE kingofsat" .............................................. However to save you from all these stress,manufacturers of satellite decoders often equip their products with various satellite positions and their associated channel parameters,thus saving you all the stress. They keep you updated with the latest satellite positions and their associated channel parameters whenever you update your decoder with their latest version of software(firmware) available for your brand.................................. Now because there are so many dish types and sizes,i will not talked really much about assembling of satellite dish as i cannot cover all in one post.......... Now every manufacturer of satellite dishes often attach a user manual that would guide the user in assembling the dish......... So to assemble your satellite dish,just follow the step by step guide on the user manual and i bet you would do just fine........ Again as earlier stated,you would need the right tools. There is always a pack of bolts and nuts that comes with the dish,so just study their shapes and sizes to know the right tools to acquire or better still take the pack of bolts and nuts as a sample to where you wish to buy the tools and they should be able to give you the right tools to go along with them..... There are two terminologies that are usually associated with satellite dish tracking >>>AZIMUTH: Azimuth is simply the the side-way(side by side) movement of the satellite dish from left to right,East-North-West-South and vice versa.................................. >>>ELEVATION AND DEPRESSION: Elevation is the upward movement of the dish,while Depression is the downward movement of the dish............. Please take note of these terms because we shall be seeing them alot as we proceed............................. Satellite transmitters in general are often positioned at a particular orbit or axis of the Earth cardinal points;EAST,WEST,NORTH AND SOUTH...... So that when you need to capture the signals of the satellite transmitter,you simply get a satellite receiving dish and focus it in the direction of the cardinal point axis or orbit where the satellite transmitter is located or positioned........................Today,many satellite networks and companies are located at almost every degree of the cardinal point axis or orbit....... For example, DSTV is located at Eutelsat w4 36 degree East ,MY-TV is located at Intelsat 10/20 ku 68.5 degree East......and so on. So to track DSTV,you must focus your dish to Eutelsat w4 36 degree East,while to track MY-TV your dish must be focused at Intelsat 10/20 ku 68.5 degree East.....and so on . ..............................................lets rap it up here for now,PART2 coming soon....

Once the duration elapses then their channels will be encrypted again on your decoder until you subscribe again..... So you actually pay as you watch...... Now, that a channel is free to watch or pay as you watch is not the only criteria that you are actually going to be able to watch such channel,your brand and specifications of satellite decoder/receiver is also very vital. Different channels(both paid and free-to-air) are broadcasted in different formats such as HD,MPEG4,MPEG2,DVSB,DVSB2.....etc. Thus to be be able to watch a channel,in addition to the criteria of pay as you watch and free-to-air,your decoder/receiver must also support the broadcast format of the channels you wish to watch.... Currently most satellite networks/companies are now broadcasting channels in HD or MPEG4 formats.... There are many manufacturers and brands of satellite decoders available today that supports almost all channel formats...... In the PART1 of this post,we talked about the different types of satellite companies like DSTV,FTA,MY-TV,HI-TV....and how they broadcast their wide range of channel packages......... Today we are going to talk about "satellite dishes(antennas) and their sizes".....lets roll.... Satellite companies often transmit their channel broadcast signals through the atmosphere,now if the frequency of transmission is low,the wavelength(distance between successive wave crests from the transmitter to the receiver) of the signal are so large that the size of the satellite dish required to recover the transmitted signal at some remote points becomes impracticable..... Based on this,satellite companies often transmit their channel broadcast signals at high frequencies so that the wavelengths of the signal are so small that the size of the satellite dish required to recover the signal becomes very practicable. Thus satellite dish sizes usually ranges from centimeters to a few meters.... The common satellite dish sizes are;60cm,90cm,1.5m,2.5m.....and so on. Satellite dishes are available in two common forms; 1. The pan steel dish form and 2. The fiber dish form. No matter the form of the dish,it must be well coated and polished so that it can reflect,recover and collect signals effectively. All satellite dishes needs a component that will absorb the signals that is being reflected,recovered and collected by the dish,such a component is called "parabolic reflectors" and the commonly used ones are LNB/LNBF(low noise block/low noise block with feed horn)... They are both signal converters,they convert whatever signal that is being reflected,recovered and collected by the dish into a form that can be interpreted by the satellite receiver/decoder(to be discussed in another part of this topic).... The LNB/LNBF are available in two frequency band forms; 1. C-band 2. Ku-band Now when satellite companies transmit their broadcast signals through the atmosphere,the signal passes through the appropriate layers of the atmosphere with the corresponding frequency of transmission.....Now there are two frequency bands commonly used for satellite transmission; 1. C-band and 2. Ku-band.... With respect to satellite broadcasting,the c-band frequency ranges from 3GHZ-8GHZ,while that of ku-band ranges from 10GHZ-14GHZ.... C-bands are more suitable for adverse weather conditions(such as rainfalls,dews or snows)..thus with c-band dish you do not need to worry about sudden interruption of the broadcasting signal of channels due to bad climates. However c-band often carry low power signals since they are not prone to microwave(signal) interference during bad weathers........Ku-bands unlike c-bands are prone to bad weather conditions and thus with ku-band dish your are likely going to experience sudden interruption in the broadcast signal of channels due to the phenomenons called rain fade and snow fade..... Thus satellite companies that broadcast their channels in ku-band usually allocate extra powers to the broadcast signals to compensate for this sudden loss of signals associated with ku-bands in bad weather condition especially during heavy rainfalls. The ku-band often carry very high power signals that can withstand the effects of the bad weather condition at least to a certain extent...however during extremely bad weather conditions ku-band dishes may receive an unstable signal fluctuation that often results in what makes satellite channels to crack.....Now with all said i believe you can choose your dish size and type of LNB that suits you.... It may also interest you to know that with some dish type(such as 2.5m fiber dish),you can enjoy both c-band and ku-band channels with the accompaning LNBF.... Wise choice right? But cost is another factor... Choose your dish type,size and parabolic reflectors wisely.....just know that for c-bands the larger the dish size the better the signal reception,for c-band1m to 4m dish size would do depending on your location from the satellite you want to receive...... For ku-band the dish size does'nt matter that much just a 60cm to 100cm dish would do great.
